Independent Electricity System Operator

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is a not-for-profit corporate entity established by the Electricity Act of Ontario. The IESO is governed by an independent Board whose Chair and Directors are appointed by the Government of Ontario.

Amongst its many activities, the IESO is responsible for securing clean sources of energy to meet the province's energy needs, including procuring generation through the FIT and microFIT programs.

The IESO is responsible for designing and implementing the FIT and microFIT programs, which include program rules, price schedules, contracts, registration, application and contracting processes, and ongoing contract management activities.

On January 1, 2015, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) was merged with the IESO, bringing together long-term planning, procurement, and conservation efforts with real-time operations of the grid.
